Is Your Company A Millennial-Friendly Workplace?
Do you hear that ticking sound? That’s the countdown to retirement clock for the baby boomer generation.
Or is that the sound of the timer about to ring in the millennial generation’s explosion into the American workforce? Either way, these younger employees are going to make up a larger and larger part of your workforce over time. Are you and your organization ready?
Attracting Millennials. Are You Doing It Wrong?
According to an excellent article over at Chief Learning Officer, here’s the problem the supply chain industry is beginning to face:
Millennials are looking to work in cool industries, and industries like supply chain management are not one of them. Millennials choose four to five other careers in business before they even consider a career in a supply chain vertical; many fall into the track accidentally, and that’s not sustainable.
The Institute for Supply Management and ThomasNet are challenging purchasing and supply chain management professionals to take responsibility for the future of their industry, which depends on a new pipeline of talent from the millennial generation to maintain its strength.
The problem goes way beyond this one industry, though. “Millennials are looking for more than just a paycheck, and they are discriminating when it comes to potential employers in ways previous generations were not,” says Tina Hamilton, PHR, president of myHR Partner. “They are often called entitled or unmotivated, but it’s not really true. We just need to better understand how this new generation of professionals, raised on emails and texts, not memos and faxes, operates.”
Businesses cannot get away from the ever present, 24/7 digital world, and organizations need to attract, hire and engage millennial employees in order to stay successful. Keeping them satisfied and meeting their need for things like modern digital tools and workplace flexibility are going to be essential for companies that want to thrive in the future. And lets face it, millennials are also the future face of our customers and clients, so if we are able to connect with those within our organizations, it stands to reason that we will have a better chance of connecting with those we serve.
