Praise Your Teams, Engage Your Workforce

Here’s some good news about this kind of employee engagement: one of the most powerful motivators you have in your manager’s toolbox doesn’t even cost a dime. That tool is praise.


Talk up the good stuff more often.

Praise is one of the most overlooked employee motivators. People want to feel appreciated and valued, and it helps build loyalty. It also increases the likelihood of employees accepting your constructive criticism. In a team setting, praise is also a strong motivator. Be sure to share the good words with more than just the recipient, too. Other teams and individuals will see that good work is rewarded and valued by the company, and they will be more likely to strive for recognition for themselves.

We particularly liked this sage advice from Employee Success Blog:

When teams are producing great results, it shouldn’t be a secret. Encourage managers to share results with other managers and the rest of the organization. This type of knowledge sharing will set the bar for other teams and drive positive behaviors across the company. It’s almost as rewarding as being an audience member in Oprah’s favorite things episode.

Remember to reward your workforce fairly as well. Whatever your company uses as a reward system, be sure that it is metered out fairly and consistently. Nothing demotivates people like the belief that there is overt favoritism in the office.

It is useful to also keep in mind that, employees are human and are going to stumble at some point in their careers. Focusing on the blame does not move your company forward, nor does it help your workforce grow stronger. If you help your employees improve their performance with the right motivation—like praise—when things aren’t going perfectly, it will go a long way in getting the most out of your investment in talent.
