Getting Caught Without Good Timesheet Records? There’s an App for That.
The U.S. Department of Labor recently launched its first application for smartphones, a timesheet to help employees independently track the hours they work and determine the wages they are owed. The free app is currently compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch and is available in English and Spanish. It makes it easy for users to track regular work hours, break time and any overtime hours for one or more employers. What makes this new technology significant to business owners is that workers can now use their smartphones to keep their own timesheets instead of only relying on their employers’ records. “This information could prove invaluable during a Wage and Hour Division investigation when an employer has failed to maintain accurate employment records,” according to the DOL press release.
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) isn’t anything new to business owners, but keeping up on the latest technologies and regulations that affect compliance is essential. “It’s always been important for companies to keep careful, accurate records on employees’ hours and wages, but this new app, might encourage more and more employees to challenge their employers, which will surely lead to more wage and hour complaints being filed,” says Tina Hamilton, hireVision Group’s president. “These days, if you don’t keep an eye on your record keeping practices, it’s getting easier and easier for someone to call you on it.”
The DOL plans to explore creating similar versions for other smartphone platforms, such as Android and BlackBerry, and other pay features not currently provided for, such as tips, commissions, bonuses, deductions, holiday pay, pay for weekends, shift differentials and pay for regular days of rest. As for now, the Wage and Hour Division has a printable work hours calendars to track rate of pay, work start and stop times, and arrival and departure times for workers without a compatible smartphone.
