hireVision CEO Is Expert in Workplace Distractions Article
Imagine our delight to see hireVision President and CEO Tina Hamilton quoted in Lehigh Valley Business last week, in the article “Workplace distractions a growing concern”. The article, which got homepage billing that Tuesday, discusses the ongoing struggle with modern-day and traditional distractions that some employers face daily.
A CareerBuilder survey cited in the article found that 38 percent of those polled said they worked solidly for the entirety of their eight-hour work day, while 21 percent worked seven hours, 18 percent worked six hours, 11 percent worked five hours, and surprisingly (or not, depending upon your work environment) a full 12 percent said they worked four hours or less.
And the largest cause of distraction? Good old-fashioned yakking. Our boss had these wise words to say on the matter:
Despite the popularity of the newest technologies, however, the survey found the most common distraction reported were non-work related chats with coworkers, with 34 percent of respondents saying it was their primary distraction.
Those chats, as long as they’re not excessive, can be productive, according to Hamilton.
“Some of that chit-chat leads to collaboration. Workers are learning from each other in some of that and are establishing trust. Organizations should be managing it not eliminating it,” Hamilton said.
Other workplace distractions include Internet searches at 22 percent; loud co-workers at 18 percent; personal calls or emails at 17 percent; office drama at 15 percent; daydreaming at 11 percent; and gossip at 7 percent.
Despite the distractions, Hamilton said, “solid workers in your organization should have enough integrity to be getting the work done.”
