Introducing “Lehigh Valley Workplaces,” Tina Hamilton’s new column for The Morning Call
“Lehigh Valley Workplaces” is a new column in The Morning Call by myHR Partner President & CEO Tina Hamilton, PHR, SHRM-CP. It will appear every three to four weeks in the Lehigh Valley’s Business Cycle section of the newspaper. Your ideas and comments are welcome for each new article.
Her first column, “The recruitment problem is not going away,” deals head-on with the recruitment problems organizations of all sizes are facing today, issues that are not going away any time soon.
From the article:
The Lehigh Valley unemployment rate remains below 5 percent. Talent is scarce and the competition is fierce. Just count the recruiting billboards on Routes 22 and 78.
On top of that, the Valley’s population grew by 20,000 last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau estimate. And according to Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp. President Don Cunningham, there are 90,000 workers who commute into our region for employment.
In 2018, a major strategy to maintain a high-quality, high-talent workplace is focusing on retention before recruiting. There’s no point investing in recruiting new employees if you can’t retain the ones you already have. Money spend on retention always will pay off in bigger ways than investing in more ads and increasing referral bonuses.
