NACE Report Shows Promising Hiring Outlook for 2013 Grads
College grads this coming spring will have even more good reasons to toss their caps in the air. That’s because according to the “Job Outlook 2012” survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers are expected to hire 13 percent more new college graduates from the Class of 2013 than they did from the Class of 2012. In the fields of pharmaceutical manufacturing; computer and electronics manufacturing; retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; management consulting and professional services employers even anticipate double-digit increases in hiring during the 2013 college recruiting season. What’s more, the percentage of employers with firm plans in place for spring recruiting is also on the upswing, from 34.4 percent in 2012 to 37.6 percent for this coming spring.
“These numbers are promising for 2013 grads,” says Tina Hamilton, PHR, president and CEO of hireVision. “But it is still essential that hiring managers stay at the top of their recruiting and interviewing game to avoid a bad hire.” (Remember how we told you a bad hire could suck as much as an entire day out of a manager’s workweek? Well, college grads are no exception.)
“Even though media reports indicate that hiring will likely remain flat at the start of 2013, the hiring process has never been more critical, as employers must weed through more applicants than ever before, and have tighter budgets and resources from which to find in each new hire,” adds Hamilton. A recent Workforce Management article reporting that close to three-quarters of U.S. employers plan to maintain current, minimal hiring levels, at least through the early part of the year lends credence to her comments.
