The Biggest Workplace Risk Isn't AI. It's Using AI Without Clear Expectations.

myHR Partner Team myHR Partner Team Aug 06, 2026

Artificial intelligence has moved from curiosity to an everyday business tool in a remarkably short time.

Whether employees are drafting emails, summarizing meetings, creating presentations, or brainstorming ideas, AI is already part of many workplaces. The question for most organizations is no longer if employees are using AI. It's how they're using it.

That shift is reflected in a recent survey from Littler, where more than 300 business leaders identified AI-related policy changes as the workplace issue most likely to affect their organizations over the coming year.

That's an important signal.

Not because every organization needs an AI strategy tomorrow, but because every organization should have clear expectations for how new tools are used.

Technology Changes Faster Than Expectations

Most organizations have experienced this before.

A new technology becomes widely available. Employees begin using it because it helps them work faster or more efficiently. Only later do leaders begin asking questions like:

    • Should confidential information ever be entered into an AI tool?
    • Can managers use AI to draft performance reviews?
    • Is AI appropriate when creating job descriptions or interview questions?
    • How should employees verify the accuracy of AI-generated information?

These aren't technology questions.

They're leadership questions.

Employees generally want to make good decisions. They simply need clarity about what is and isn't appropriate within their organization.

A Policy is a Start. Conversations Matter More.

According to the survey, many employers have already adopted AI policies. Fewer have established formal processes for reviewing AI tools or determining how those tools should be used across the organization.

That's understandable.

Technology is evolving quickly.

The important thing isn't creating the perfect policy. It's starting the conversation.

Managers should understand the organization's expectations. Employees should know where AI can improve efficiency and where human judgment remains essential. Leaders should periodically revisit those expectations as technology and business needs continue to evolve.

Keep the Focus on Good Judgement

AI can help people work more efficiently.

It can't replace sound judgment, thoughtful leadership, or accountability.

Whether you're introducing AI, implementing a new technology platform, or updating workplace policies, the principle is the same: people perform best when expectations are clear.

That's why organizations should view AI as another opportunity to strengthen communication, equip managers, and establish consistent practices across the organization.

Those fundamentals have always mattered.

They just matter in new ways.

Questions Worth Asking

If your organization is using AI today, consider asking:

    • Have we discussed when AI is appropriate and when it isn't?
    • Are managers giving employees consistent guidance?
    • Do employees understand what information should never be entered into AI tools?
    • Have we communicated expectations, even if they're still evolving?
    • Are we reviewing those expectations as technology changes?

You don't need all the answers immediately.

But you should start asking the questions.

Every new workplace challenge, whether it's AI, compliance, or evolving manager responsibilities, benefits from clear expectations and consistent leadership.

myHR Partner works alongside organizations to help leaders strengthen people practices, support managers, and navigate workplace change with confidence.

If you're not sure where to start, let's have a conversation.
